Witcher 3 Missables Checklist

Every point of no return and missable card, so you can finish side content before the story locks it away.

How missable content works

The Witcher 3 is mostly forgiving — most secondary quests and contracts stay open until you finish them. The danger is a handful of main-quest “points of no return” that advance time and silently fail any side quests tied to those characters or places. The rule of thumb: clear Velen, Novigrad and Skellige side content before you push the main story past the gates below.

Points of no return

Main quest gateWhat it locks out
The Isle of MistsMost open Velen / Novigrad / Skellige secondary quests fail when you finally go to find Ciri here. Finish them first.
Battle of Kaer MorhenAllies you recruit (or don't) are decided beforehand; recruitment quests can't be done after it starts.
Blood on the Battlefield / endgameFree-roam is limited once the finale begins — do remaining contracts and Gwent before the last main quests.
Leaving for SkelligeA few White Orchard and early Velen errands tied to specific NPCs can expire.

Commonly missed quests

  • Secondary quests near main beats Quests like “Fool's Gold,” “Return to Crookback Bog” and the Bloody Baron line are time-sensitive relative to main progress — do them when they appear.
  • Velen & Novigrad clean-up Knock out the long list of “?” points and secondary quests before The Isle of Mists, or they vanish from the log.
  • Romance windows Triss must be romanced during “Now or Never”; Yennefer during “The Last Wish.” Miss the window and the path closes.

Missable Gwent cards

Completionists' biggest worry: a few Gwent cards come from characters who can leave the world or die as the story advances, or from one-time quests. Win or buy cards early.

  • Quest-locked cards Cards tied to “Gwent: Old Pals,” “Gwent: Big City Players” and the “High Stakes” tournament can be lost if you skip those quests or fail the matches.
  • Vendor cards Buy every merchant's cards in Velen and Novigrad before progressing — some traders become unreachable later.
  • Play everyone once Beat each innkeep and named player you meet; several only offer their card on a first win.

Things you cannot permanently miss

  • Contracts and treasure hunts stay open until completed.
  • Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are separate expansions you can start any time at the recommended level.
  • Places of Power and most “?” map points remain until you visit them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main point of no return in Witcher 3?
Starting “The Isle of Mists” main quest fails most open secondary quests in Velen, Novigrad and Skellige. Clear that side content before you go looking for Ciri there.
Can you miss Gwent cards permanently?
Yes — a few cards come from quests or vendors who can leave or die as the story advances. Win and buy cards early, especially during “Old Pals,” “Big City Players” and the “High Stakes” tournament.
Are contracts and treasure hunts missable?
No. Contracts, treasure hunts and most “?” points stay in your log until you finish them, even into the late game.
Do the expansions have a point of no return?
Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are self-contained and can be started any time. Within each, finish side quests before the final main quest.
